The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California, is the oldest art museum in the Western United States. Founded in 1885, this establishment boasts an extensive art collection featuring works from California and America's Gold Rush era to the present day, as well as European paintings and master drawings. Additionally, it has one of the largest international ceramics collections in the United States and various collections of Asian, African, and Oceanic art. The museum has accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, a highly respected standard for museums in the US. Edwin B. Crocker (1818–1875), a wealthy California lawyer and judge, and his wife Margaret Crocker (1822–1901) began to amass a significant collection of paintings and drawings during their extended European trip from 1869 to 1871. After returning to Sacramento, they established an art gallery in a section of their impressive residence at the intersection of Third and O streets. The gallery, which opened with 694 paintings, was the largest privately held collection in the country and had more paintings than the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
